Employer has one of her best work days with Defence Reserves Support! By Flying Officer Julia Ravell
The Prince Charles Hospital’s Critical Care Nursing Director, Mary Wheeldon, didn’t survive her F-111 mission at RAAF Base Amberley. Mary’s simulated bomber aircraft was shot down somewhere between base and Mt Flinders but the 47-year-old resident of McDowall is still alive to tell the story of a day with the Air Force Reserve that she describes as “one of the best working days I’ve had in the last decade”.

Agreement strengthens relationships with International friends
On 19 October 2007 a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Australia and the United Kingdom, ‘The Reserve Forces Foreign Service Arrangement’, was signed at the Reserves International Meeting held in Brisbane. A similar MOU between Australia and Canada was signed earlier in 2007.
These MOUs allow Reservists of one country, who temporarily reside in the other country on other than Defence business, to train with Defence forces of the other country.
The MOUs provide for a voluntary, individual arrangement, developed solely to meet the training needs of individual Reservists when they reside temporarily within a second nation in circumstances unrelated to Defence Force training or service.
The MOUs do not apply to attachments, loans, or exchanges of either Regular or Reserve Forces personnel, such as mutual exchanges or small unit exchanges, which will be governed by separate arrangements, as appropriate.
The MOUs allow approved individuals, both officers and other ranks, who are qualified to do particular tasks according to their home Service, to undergo training and be engaged in employment related to those tasks with the host Service. All training activities in the second country are subject to approval by their home Service and other conditions.
Outcomes from the MOUs, also, are to foster the development and maintenance of an active relationship between the national Reserve Forces.

Western Sydney Business Connection Visits RAAF RICHMOND - 2 August 2007
Defence Reserves Support sponsored a group of 35 business leaders from Western Sydney Business Connection and the Hawkesbury City Council who visited RAAF Base Richmond on 2 August. The day started with a windscreen tour of the Base which included a quick look at the contractor facilities, main flying hubs and corporate services infrastructure group, messes, air terminal, fire section and hospital.
Wing Commander Michael Stuart-Watt and Squadron Leader John Kane did a fantastic job of pointing out what was what, as well as briefing the group on what Air Lift Group did and the importance of Reserves for Air Force capability.
After a working lunch, the group went to No. 37 Squadron to be briefed on its operational role within the Air Force. There was certainly a lot of interest in the C130 Hercules! Finally the group walked through a C130J on the tarmac. Most visitors even had the opportunity to sit in the cockpit.
