Mounted troopers paraded through the streets and precision parachutists from the Red Berets descended on The Esplanade, Darwin, as part of 25th anniversary celebrations for the North West Mobile Force (NORFORCE) held in June, 2006.
At the Darwin Cenotaph, the Administrator of the Northern Territory, Mr. Ted Egan, presented the Queens and Regimental Colours to NORFORCE Commander Lieutenant Colonel Dick Parker. It was the first time that inaugural Colours have been presented to a unit from the NT.
More than 250 NORFORCE Reservists and regulars stood crisply to attention as the Chief of the Army, Lieutenant General Peter Leahy inspected the ranks. Land Commander, Major General Mark Kelly, was also among the VIP guests present at the parade.
Assigned to ongoing surveillance operations in northern Australia since its inception in WWII, NORFORCE has the largest area of operations of any military unit in the world.
The unit relies heavily on the commitment and local knowledge of its high proportion of Aboriginal soldiers who deploy in small groups throughout the rugged north of Australia.
During WWII, the men of the 2/1 NAOU (colloquially known as “Nackeroos”) observed and reported on enemy movements on land, sea or in the air. Today, NORFORCE protects Australia’s coast from smuggling and illegal fishing and is an integral part of the nation’s coastal defence network.
LTCOL Parker said that the unit was proud of its role in the Defence of Australia. The Presentation of the Queen’s Colours added to the honours already achieved by the unit such as Freedom of Entry to the city of Darwin.
“This is a very significant event for both the Regiment and the Australian Army,” said LTCOL Parker.
“The award of colours symbolises the loyal and dedicated service of the men and women of NORFORCE over the past 25 years.
The Regiment expects to have the majority of its members on parade that will come from communities across the top end of Australia,” he said.
The Parade through Darwin was the culmination of a week-long series of celebrations that included a re-enactment of a Nackeroo horse patrol at Manbullo Station in the Katherine region.

The Norforce, is made up of over 60 perecent Indigenous soldiers, is used as a surveillance and reconnaissance unit covering an area of 1.8 million square kilometres in the Northern Territory and the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The unit relies on close relations with the isolated civilian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders communities for successful information gathering. Local inhabitants are often the first to notice abnormal movements of personnel, vehicles or aircraft and this information is passed on to the six-man patrols that regularly visit stations and outlying communities. With a total of over 600 personnel, it is the largest employer of Indigenous people in the Northen Territory.
